What is compost?Compost is decomposed organic matter that becomes a nutrient-rich soil amendment. American Compost is primarily made from cow manure. The final product is finely screened at our farm before bagging, so there are no dry chunks, sticks, or overs*. *Overs are large pieces of material that remain in compost after the composting process. Overs don't provide any benefits since they haven't been broken down can easily become contaminated with plastics and metals.
-
Why should I use compost?Improves soil structure: Helps sandy soil retain moisture and clay soil drain better. Enhances nutrient content: Provides slow-release nutrients for healthy plant growth. Increases beneficial microbial activity: Promotes a healthy soil ecosystem. Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers: Offers a natural alternative.
-
How do I use compost in my lawn?Topdressing: Spread a thin layer over your lawn, then rake it in. Aeration and overseeding: Apply compost after aerating and overseeding.
-
How do I use compost in my garden?Mix it into the soil before planting. Mix it in with mulch around your plants. Create a compost "tea" for watering
-
How do I make compost "tea"?Prepare water Let water sit overnight to reduce chlorine. Chlorine can damage microorganisms in the tea. Add compost Mix one part American Compost with 10 parts water. You can put the compost in a bag and float it in the water. Brew Stir the mixture once or twice a day. The brewing time depends on the temperature, but it can take 12–36 hours if it's above 60°F. In colder temperatures, it can take up to 72 hours. Dilute Dilute the concentrate with four parts water. Strain If you want to use a garden sprayer, strain out large particles with cheesecloth.
-
Is compost safe for pets and children?Yes! American Compost is 100% organic and contains no chemicals or human bio-solids.

Can you top dress year-round?Yes! Here are some tips for application during hotter months: Thinner is Better: In hot weather, thick layers of compost can smother the grass and create a breeding ground for disease. Aim for a very thin layer, about 1/4 inch or less. Think of it as a light dusting rather than a heavy blanket. Water Wisely: Help the compost integrate into the soil by watering lightly but frequently after application. This prevents the compost from forming a crust and ensures it reaches the roots. Timing is Key: Early morning or late evening applications are best during hot months. This minimizes the risk of the compost burning the grass and allows it to absorb moisture before the heat of the day.

When is the best time to apply top dressing? While top dressing can be beneficial year-round, early spring (March or April in our area) is truly the sweet spot. Here's why: Ideal Soil Temperatures: Soil temperatures are starting to warm up, encouraging root growth and microbial activity. This means the compost will break down efficiently and its nutrients will be readily available to the grass. Reduced Weed Competition: Weeds haven't fully emerged yet, giving your lawn a head start in absorbing the nutrients from the compost. Recovery from Winter: Your lawn is coming out of dormancy and needs a boost. Topdressing provides essential nutrients and helps repair any damage from winter weather. Preparation for Summer: A healthy, well-fed lawn in spring will be better equipped to handle the stresses of summer heat and drought.

Can you mix it with sand and top soil on a new yard?Mixing compost with sand and topsoil for a new yard is a fantastic idea, and it's a technique often used on golf courses for good reason. Here's why it works so well: Improved Soil Structure: Sand: Improves drainage in clay soils and helps sandy soils hold together better. Compost: Adds organic matter, which creates air pockets in heavy clay soil and improves water retention in sandy soil. Topsoil: Provides a balanced foundation with existing nutrients and minerals. Enhanced Nutrient Content: Compost acts as a slow-release fertilizer, providing essential nutrients for new grass to thrive. Increased Microbial Activity: Compost introduces beneficial microorganisms that help break down organic matter and improve soil health. Easier Leveling: The combination of these materials creates a workable consistency that's easier to spread and level than using any single component alone. Why Golf Courses Use This Technique Golf courses need perfectly level surfaces for optimal playing conditions. This blend helps them achieve that while also creating a healthy growing environment for their highly maintained turf. Tips for Your New Yard Get a Soil Test: Before you start, a soil test will tell you the exact composition of your existing soil and help you determine the right proportions of sand, compost, and topsoil. Use Quality Materials: Opt for good quality compost from American Compost, topsoil, and coarse sand. Avoid using fill dirt, which can be compacted and lack nutrients. Mix Thoroughly: Use a rototiller or other equipment to blend the materials evenly. Proper Depth: Aim for a depth of 4-6 inches of this mixed soil for optimal root growth. Grade and Level: Take your time to ensure a smooth, even surface before laying sod or seeding.
